The story of Cinderella is a cultural touchstone, immortalized in film,
literature and — thanks to French composer Jules Massenet — opera. His
Cendrillon is a 19th-century take on the fairy tale, and an absolute
delight in a genre dominated by heart-wrenching tragedies. Since
Massenet’s adaptation is rarely staged, we thought we’d share this
moment posted by Liceu Opera Barcelona, performed by none other than
Joyce DiDonato (who is also singing the title role in the Met’s 2018
production). In this scene, Cendrillon drifts off, dreaming of the ball
she has been forbidden to attend. La Fée (the Fairy Godmother) shows up,
works her literal magic and makes Cendrillon’s dreams come true. You
know the story.
