Mychal Judge was a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest serving as the fire chaplain for the Fire Department of New York City on September 11, 2001. On September 11th, he became the first certified fatality of the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. Many people know him from the photo of a man being carried, Christ-like, from the rubble. That man is Fr. Mychal Judge.
The fame and tragedy surrounding his death is, however, only part of his story. Fr. Mychal also worked in New York ministering to the homeless, immigrants, people with AIDS, and the LGBTQ+ community. He has been recognized with statues, songs, awards, and even a film.
Our project commemorates Fr. Mychal’s life and work with 14 songs, composed by Kevin Salfen. The 14 songs are meant to mirror the 14 Stations of the Cross, a Franciscan devotion surrounding the last day of Jesus Christ on Earth leading up to the Crucifixion. Ranging from Irish tunes to flowing lyrical numbers, the cycle will be performed by Rick Novak (tenor), Ames Asbell (viola), and Joey Martin (piano) on September 10-11, 2021 at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, as well as at other preliminary performances.
